Appointments & Treatment

These Physical Therapy FAQs cover the most common questions patients ask about appointments, treatment, insurance, and getting started.

Maine is a direct access state, which means you can come to physical therapy without a referral. Some insurance plans require one, so our front desk team is happy to verify your benefits before your first visit.

We do our best to schedule new patients within a few days. With multiple locations across Southern Maine, we can help you find the soonest appointment that works with your schedule.

  • Insurance card(s)

  • Any referral or imaging (MRI, X-ray, etc.)

Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that lets you move easily. Your therapist may need to access the area being treated, so shorts or a tank top may be helpful depending on your injury.

Your first visit is typically 60 minutes. Follow-ups usually last 30–60 minutes, depending on your individualized treatment plan.

Yes. You will work one-on-one with the same therapist for every appointment, with the rare exception of a planned therapist vacation or unplanned therapist absence, in which case we would attempt to move your appointment to an alternate therapist’s schedule in order to keep you on track.

Physical therapy should not cause sharp or worsening pain. Mild soreness is normal as your body adapts. Your therapist will monitor your comfort closely and adjust your exercises if anything feels too intense.

Everyone is different. Your therapist will create a personalized plan based on your goals, injury, and lifestyle. Many patients see improvement in just a few weeks.

Insurance & Payment:

We accept most major insurance plans, including commercial insurance, Medicare, and workers’ compensation. We can check your coverage before your first visit.

Yes. We offer affordable cash-pay options for patients without insurance or those who prefer not to use their benefits.

At the time of service. Those with a deductible are encouraged to pay toward their balance at each visit, to avoid lump sum payments at the end of care.

Absolutely. You always have the right to choose where you receive physical therapy, no matter where your referral is sent.

Yes — at select Reform PT locations. We treat pelvic pain, incontinence, pregnancy-related discomfort, postpartum recovery, core dysfunction, and more. We can help you find the closest clinic offering this specialty.

Yes. Several of our therapists specialize in vestibular therapy, including treatment for BPPV, dizziness, and balance problems.

Yes — certain therapists at select locations provide dry needling and cupping as part of a customized treatment plan. Your therapist can determine if these techniques would benefit your condition.

General Questions

We want you to feel comfortable. If you feel a different therapist might be a better fit, we will help you make a seamless transition to another member of our team.

Often, yes. Many people avoid surgery through strengthening, mobility work, and targeted treatment. If surgery is still needed, physical therapy helps improve outcomes.

Bring any updates about your symptoms, pain levels, or lifestyle changes. Wear comfortable clothing and be ready to move. Your therapist will progress your program based on how you’re doing.

Yes. With your permission, we communicate directly with your doctor, specialist, or surgeon to ensure you receive consistent, collaborative care.
